Title: How do I cash a Cashier's Check Post by Erl00 on Sep 28th, 2004, 9:47am Hello all, This has already been posted on MOTL but I guess a thread here wouldn't harm :) A few months ago, I have filed a Mail Fraud complaint against a ripper on eBay. I couldn't get reimbursed from Paypal as I had let the 30-day delay pass. Today, I have had the very good surprise to recieve a registered letter from the Department of Justice of Oregon including a Cashier's Check from Bank of America labelled to the order of my name for the $145 the guy had ripped me off. Yeah 8) Another victory against ripping [smiley=evil.gif] As you know, I am French and I live in France. Cashing US$ is not possible here. My simple question is: How do I get my money? Ancillary questions: - Do I need to have a bank account in the US to cash a Cashier's Check? - Do I need to have a physical address in the US to open a Bank Account in the US? - If I go to the US myself in the next 70 days (validity limit of the check), can I just go to ANY bank and get cash against this cashier's check? - If I go to the US myself in the next 70 days (validity limit of the check), can I just go to the Bank of America (bank named on the check) and get cash against this cashier's check? - Last recourse, can I send the check to someone living in the US with a letter hand-written from me + photocopy of my passport to prove my identity, so that this person can cash the check on my behalf? Any other idea? [smiley=idea.gif] Thank you Eric. :) |

Thanks Alexis :) Do you remember if they took you huge amounts of transactions fees for cashing the check? I will call Bank of America in Paris (didn't know they had on office there :)) Anyway, as I am travelling to the US next week (lol, good timing), if there's an easy way to transform this check into solid cash without fees there, I am still interested ;D Regards, Eric. EDIT: Just called BoA in Paris and they told me that, as I am not a multinational company they wouldn't move their small finger for me :( but that I should be able to cash the check in the US ... |

Title: Re: How do I cash a Cashier's Check Post by themike314 on Sep 28th, 2004, 11:56am If you are going to the U.S., you should definately be able to cash the check in any bank. You'll need some sort of ID (passport). Most banks will charge you a couple of dollars if you don't have an account with them. You should also be able to cash the check at a supermarket/grocery store, or Wal-Mart - though they will probably charge you more to do so. (Although you might be lucky enough to run across one that does it for free.) |

Title: Re: How do I cash a Cashier's Check Post by victorcamp on Sep 28th, 2004, 2:38pm Good suggestions all. Since Cashier's checks are guaranteed, you should be able to cash it anywhere here in the U.S. with proper identification (such as your passport). Fees will vary. A Bank of America should cash it with no fees, since my experience is that all banks cash their own checks free. The places to avoid, however, are check-cashing stores (the places that specialize in payday loans), where fees can go as high as 10%. |

I am very glad to go to the US next week indeed :) And I assume it won't be difficult to find a Bank of America agency in LA, Vegas or SFO ;D Best regards, Eric. |

So I went to http://www.ifccfbi.gov/cf1.asp and this seems to have worked!! :) Eric. |
