Title: Discussion about names - Summer 4th
Post by Gryfalia on Jul 13th, 2004, 6:30pm

As was shown in the other topic on the board, the incredibly poorly nicknamed 'Summer 4th' is just going to become more and more problematic.

I don't know who first started calling it that, but calling a relatively common set of cards from one set by a name stunningly similar to the accepted name of a much rarer and more valuable set (Summer/Edgar) is just going to keep causing problems.

Especially because the 2 'sets' (revised and 4th) are right next to each other in the set spectrum, someone could just assume that the seller is the confused one.

I suspect Dan Bock is to blame, because he's nothing but trouble.. ;D

Anyway, I think that, to some extent, we need to come up with something 'better' as a nickname.  Something that won't get this sub-set confused with another one.

This is a typical lack of precision, used by many. The Alternate Fourth Edition should by no means be named Summer, as it neither has something to do with Summer Edition, nor is it in any way affiliated with the season of summer. Likewise, people sell cards as Beta Collector's Edition. Dan Bock has nothing to do with it, he called the mysterious Fourth Edition cards he discovered simply Alternate Fourth Edition, and this is the name I use for the website.

Alternative 4th, or UV's. Simple.

Try AIM.

Anyway, some people have been calling them "waxbacks," which, though a bit crude, is definitely a good description.

Well what every name you give it will be fine.

But so every one knows, I just cam across 4th ed starters sealed that have the UV backs. How I know is we found a full starter box and a customer open a deck and we saw the cards. I then open three more decks and there were all uv backs, so I know the Decks are good.

Another deck to try to collect.

Also confirmation that these UV's weren't just distributed to WotC and leaked, or just floating around in blank boxes or something. This shows they were definetly WotC product and an attempt for a new version by WotC instead of a "prototype of what another company could do" (the earlier theory)....

Interesting they are in starters.... very interesting.

Back in the early discussions about the origins of these, fvzappa mentioned that in his area they came from starters.

Yup, sure did. I have no way to differentiate them from the outside, unfortunatly. These cards were made in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. naturally, these cards are easy to find around here.

It is possible that they also came in boosters too, but of this I am not sure. They also could have just "appeared", it is possible. Hard to say. I've busted about 500 packs, maybe 100 starters of 4th edition. However, all of them were busted before I knew about the alt. Damn.

I even have a misprinted alt 4th, the yellow is printed way off center from the rest of the card front. Looks strange, & was given to me by someone who was unaware of its double significance.

Hrmm... interesting.

MCM: Sorry, must have missed that!

It would be cool to find boosters :)

4th edition boosters aren't too expensive at all... I'm almost tempted to buy 1 from like 40 different people... whether or not i found uvs i would have a set or two :P

No local stores sell 4th... but I can drive 2 hours and pick some up if really necessarily.
