No, they were uncommons.
All they had were commons and uncommons in that set.
They had "rare" uncommons (2 on a sheet), and they had uncommons(3-4 on a sheet).
Commons were also like this, they had "uncommon" commons (1-2 on a sheet), and commons (3-up to 11 on a sheet).
Deserts were 11 to a sheet, they were going to be a new basic land.
They were also going to include basic lands, but they pulled them at the last moment.
But they missed one mountain per common sheet, so it's almost an uncommon. (And worth almost as much as most uncommons).
As for my most liked (and used) commons, i'd have to say dark ritual, lightning bolt, lotus pedal.
