Title: What things other than M:TG do people collect?
Post by mintcollector on Nov 20th, 2003, 9:16pm

What else does everyone collect besides M:TG?  I personally collect swords and knives.  Most are fantasy replicas, many Gil Hiben pieces, but I do have some antique or original pieces.  My oldest piece being an bone handled armor splitter from the 10th century.  My most valuable piece in my collection is King Henry III's sword from his attempted invasion of Sicily, yes the actual sword itself from which my father bought it from a good friend of his who had it in his collection for 26 years.  My coolest piece though is a Luftwaffe officer's dagger.  My grandfather got the dagger by killing a German officer who parachuted out of his failing plane in WWII.  The dagger is in great condition with only minor pitting on the blade.  The scabbard and hilt are in near perfect shape and the embossed emblem is still 100% intact with no excessive wear.

i collect just about everything. I'm a packrat. I have collections of many other types of cards, coins, comics, I save all my international mail envelopes for the stamps, music (i even still buy records). I don't collect knives though :)  That takes effort. All my other collections are casual.

I also used to do VHS tapes which is now laughable in the DVD-world.  I have well over 600 movies on original tape.  (Sigh) Now they just take up room on multimedia shelves in the basement.

Wow Alexis, do you collect a lot.  I get mint proof sets of US coins every year.  Have them going back to the mid-80's.  Funny you mentioned fossils.  Do you ever go fossil hunting yourself?  I used to quite frequently as a kid.  We would go to a abandoned strip mine about 2 hours away from where I live now and search. We mainly found ferns as the area was a low sea millions of years ago, but I did find a trilobyte and an old snail like creature before.  My dad used to take us as kids all the time.  I haven't been in years.

I collect way too many things too:

Records/ CD's- I have about 1500 albums, many are hard to find and/ or colorful

Rock & Roll memorabilia & autographs- I have stuff from music videos, concerts, David Bowie artwork, Frank Zappa's will (no joke), a few hundred autographs, etc. You name it.  - I esp. go for: Frank Zappa (notice my username), David Bowie, Spinal Tap, Weird Al, Traveling Wilburys, Tori Amos, Pixies, many more.

Converse shoes- I have 35 pairs in Size 13... as a heterosexual male I spend a bit of time defending myself on that...but many are really interesting.

I've kept all of my toys from when I was younger, & being a completist & a packrat I've bought more Star Wars & retro stuff over the years...

I'll stop now!

There also is a party slogan on the blade itself:

"Alles für Deutschland" which I believe means Everything for Germany.

I've collected many things over my life. I think the first thing that I collected were beer cans in the early 70's.
then I collected hot wheels  had over 20,000 at one time. I hate to admit it but I collected precious moments with my ex. it was more her collection but my need to collect and search for things i found most of all the original ones for the collection witch she got in the divorce. not that i wanted them but I could have sold them and bought several alpha and beta sets with the money  ;D I have an original wyvern set and every d+d book ever made. my friends say i collect kids too having 5 of my own lol

HI Fvzappa.
1500 Albums is a Nice Collection.I used to have as much
since I was a DJ in my early days  ;) But my records Collection get stolen...That day,I think I was going to die
of a heart Attack  :'(
Since then,I have Not one Record anymore, and I try over the years to replace them by CD.

Converse Shoes.
I do collect shoes also  ;D
I still have my Converse "Camouflage".Pretty Rare.Do you have them?

Title: Re: What things other than M:TG do people collect?
Post by fvzappa on Nov 24th, 2003, 5:53am

Ah, yes, the Camo's. I've got the traditional "army" camo w/ shades of green/brown/tan. I've also got "suburban camo", which is the same concept w/ shades of blue & black. I guess they blend in w/ a pool liner...

The more unusual ones I have are snake skin (fake BTW), hawiiian sunset, peace signs, & an Olympic pair w/ flags of all the competing countries on the shoes. Most of the pairs are USA made too.

Sorry to hear your records were stolen. Most of the records I've picked up really cheap, over the past 5-10 years. Save for a few rare gems, most cost me 33 cents, maybe 50 cents each. Problem is, my record buying has all but stopped, everywhere I go I see the same albums! I've already got them or flat out don't want them. And, everyone insists I shoud be a DJ, I actually wouldn't mind doing it sometime.

A big problem too- the smaller, independant stores that sell records are dropping like flies, only the mall stores are around, & I've hated paying so much for the latest albums. So, records are really disappearing.

I picked up a "Meet the Beatles" original press in mediocre condition at a garage sale for 2 bucks  ;D.  I didn't know what it was worth so I haggled him down from 3.  Anyway, if you're interested no biggie, I dont collect albums.  Mainly I just collect dust.

Sure, dry_cereal. I'll want that, I only have 3 Beatles records.

I've found 13 crimped cards so far, they sit on top of my computer. I'm still looking for more....

Collect anything "old" or "ancient"... legitimate stuff. Not antique store crap.

Ex: I have a coin that dates to around 1640, from a small division of spain, very rare :-)

Also have some Maori (Native People of New Zealand) Carvings, and some Soapstone Carvings of Spirits from Belize.

I am looking into getting some nice old  Chinese wood carvings or tapestries... expensive though.

Also collect foreign money, but in a very casual manner. I have a lot of money from the old "East Africa" and the "CCCP"... not very valuable, but still cool :-)

Dragsamou:

Ooooo I like it. Another "to the side" collector. I have put maybe no more than 50-100 dollars on any one item. But perhaps.. (not quite yet, I need to save some money)... but.. in the future, I am very interested in Paper Money. (Especially from Countries no longer in existance!)

We will talk some later? I think so :-)

Thanks,
Dylan I.

for those who collect coins... wanna trade some mtg cards for a 1914-D lincoln cent?  the condition isn't uber great - i would estimate it to be around G-4 - but it is one of the key dates in the lincoln cent series :)

also, anyone want to trade some mtg cards for a MS-64 (as graded by ANACS) 1882-CC morgan silver dollar? :)

I am not a huge coin collecctor anymore, but those coins are relatively "common".  It would be like offering a Rarities collector a plain Serra Angel or something along those lines.  I thought of Bob as well since I recall he is into coins.  He might want to Morgan dollar, but the penny is easy to get.

i will grant that, as far as expensive coins are concerned, these aren't all that expensive, but then again, you have to consider the fact that coins command *much* higher prices than mtg cards.  rare coins routinly sell for millions of dollars, while the rarest most unique mtg cards sell for, at most, $10,000 - $20,000.  so while these coins may well be the serra angels of the coin world they're worth is more on par with the library of alexandria's from the mtg world.

consider the 1914-D lincoln cent.  it's a key date for a reason.  actually, a number of reasons, heh.  first, the 1914-D lincoln cent had a relatively low mintage as far as lincoln cents are concerned.  the mintage, as given to my by coinfacts.com is a little over a million.  the only other lincoln cent with a lower mintage is a little less than half a million, and that is the 1909-S VDB lincoln cent.  contrast this with the mintage for the steel cents (which was around a billion, from ea. mint) and indeed, just about any recent lincoln cent, and you will see that the 1914-D is quite uncommon.  further, while the 1909-S VDB cent was instantly known to be a rarity, the 1914-D cent wasn't.  atleast not initially.  the result of this is that it is harder to find a 1914-D cent in good condition than it is to find a 1909-S VDB cent, in good condition.

in fact, an article on the PCGS website lists the 1914-D lincoln cent amonst the top 50 most highly demanded coins.

http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article1775.chtml

now consider the 1882-CC morgan silver dollar...  that's not too rare, nor is it too sought after, but...  that is more than made up for, imho, by it's condition of MS-64.

Oops....I was thinking of the 1943 Steel pennies when ripping on your 1914-D.  Bob may indeed need that coin.

oh, heh :)
yeah...  those steel cents aren't worth much...  in fact, serious collectors probably wouldn't even give a cent for 'em, heh.  i mean, you have a coin that isn't worth anything, but you don't want to spend all the same, heh.

anyways, i put some pictures of the coins up, here:

http://www.frostjedi.com/terra/coins.html

anyways, if bob, or anyone, wanted 'em, i would send first, as i've never actually done online trades, before :)
