Title: what do you collect
Post by dry_cereal on Oct 25th, 2003, 2:33am

Hello, I'm dry cereal, and I'm a crimp-a-holic...
As you know, I collect crimps.  It's very fun because it is something you just kind of run into and there isn't much competition because no one else likes them.  (Thank you to my contributers.  You make my collection possible).  I want another collection though.  I'm deliberating what it should be.  I thought of just going for sheer quantity, but storage would get tricky and it's just too sloppy.  So what should I collect?  To get some ideas...

What do you collect?
What is your particular magic (for lack of a better word) "fetish"?  What is your "bag"?

This is the post to let us know what you collect, and why what you collect is great.

Well, I just get whatever promos I can get my hands on, especially MPR tokens and prerelease cards.  Also, among normal cards, I'm currently 1 Cleanse away from having every white mass removal instant and sorcery.

Oh, and I keep lots of my booster wrappers for some reason.

Edit: Working on my bear collection now, too. :)

Hello from Spain.
I'm a collector since 1996. I have completed Beta, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, The Dark, Fallen Empires, Unglued and P3K in english.
In Spanish: 4th Edition (Black Border), Ice Age, Alliances, Homelands, Mirage, Visions, Weatherlight, Tempest, Stronghold, Exodus, Urza's Saga, Portal and Portal 2nd Age.
I'm interested in complete all spanish set foils, since Urza's Legacy to Mirrodin. I have complete Apocalipse and Jugdment. I'm looking for spanish foil cards.
I also collected the "Beta" versions in differents languages. (Revised BB in italian, french and german; and 4th edition BB in portuguese, chinese, japanese and korean)
I'm interested also in japanese Chronicles and foils promos, Tokens, etc.

Greetings, specially to Cyrfer of Hamburg, Germany.

Hi, I used to post on the old site, but marrige has kept me away from magic for awhile...

Anway, I collect Rats.  Any and all rat and rat related cards.  I currently have about 4,000 rats and have every english version of the rat cards except Summer Revised and Portal Three Kingdoms.  Also have all the foil versions except for 8th Edition Swarm of Rats.  Just started looking into getting 1 each of all the non-english rats, but found that all total theres about 400 versions out there...and I have 7 of them :(

I have a pretty simple goal, collect one of each common from every set, BUT, I must do it by opening packs, not just buying singles. I guess it's to make sure I have a nice well-rounded collection of all sorts of cards. Sounds easy enough but my Magic budget is limited so there's still far to go. Commons from real old sets (pre-FE) don't count as "common" for this purpose. They did for a while, but buying Unlimited/Legends/Arabian boosters was getting expensive. :P

I also collect the MPR token cards, prerelease cards, and Unglued. I was hoping Unglued 2 would come out but no. :(

Hi all!

- Well, a couple of you already know, I collect Booster packs: all languages, all set. No pictures variations though. I currently have a bit more than 300 different packs and I'm missing about 20 of them.

- I also collect more or less other sealed MtG products, but this collection is mainly unstructured at the moment and would need a clearer focus.

- I collect Summer Magic Howl from Beyond. I have only 4 of them at the moment but I'm still looking for more.

- I have a complete Beta set that I would like to be the most MINT possible. So I also collect MINT betas to upgrade my set.

- I have started some months ago a Basic land collection. I have gathered many sets of basic lands from a lot of sets in different languages. However, I really believe it's impossible for me to catch up on WotC set release rate. I also need to refocus this collection.

- And I also try to complete a few sets (English 8th, French Portal Second Age, etc.)

- I also like to colelct extreme miscuts, filler cards, misprints of all kinds, summer cards, etc.

- I have just started another colelction that I will not talk about right now but that I hope to become proud of in about 1 year from now.

- I may consider starting a set of Unglued Artist Proofs. This could be dificult. I still need to assess the feasibility of such a set.

And, that's it :)
Regards,
Eric.

As it states on the left hand side of my message here, I collect all Red and Land cards.  I have been collecting Beta onwards (not sure why I left out Alpha).  Essentially, I have one of every RED and LAND card (English only) up to Mirrodin so far, and only missing about 2 dozen cards or so.  Virtually everything is mint, and they currently reside in three 3" binders.  My Land cards take up one black binder, and my Red cards take up 2 binders.  I collect all regular released set cards as well as all promo cards.  The only promo card(s) I currently am missing, are the JSS 2-headed dragon, as well as the Japanese shugar-daddy dragon (I can never remember how to spell it, so this is how I name it!!!)

So, if anyone every needs/wants to know what order cards were released, I organize all my 'regular' cards by set release (including Chronicles, Unglued, etc), and all my promos by release also.

Lastly, I include within my Red Promo cards, all red token cards (WOTC only), including Goblin Token, but not Goblin Soldier Token (I consider it a gold card).  For those that recall a previous set of posts of Jun tokens and a bad seller, I had also wanted to collect all non-WOTC Red Token cards, and I was doing good on it, until I was screwed around on the 5-Goblin Token.  Oh well.  Cest lavie (I think it is spelled! :) )

In addition to older, "fun" cards, I also am the proud owner of over 200 Fyndhorn Brownies from Ice Age :-) Such a silly but fun collection.. no stores near me have any brownies left!!

I casually collect sets, I have most of a beta set, about half an alpha, all the expansions up through tempest, when I stopped doing this, and a handful of others that I thought were worth doing.

I collect all the promos and other weird stuff.

I collect unopened packs, but that's mostly all english and a handful of foreign ones. And again this stopped around Tempest, except for a handful that I thought were worth keeping.

I also collect the card Kudzu.

And recently I started collecting old magic advertisements. This is my current focus. It's a lot harder than you think!

I collect misprints of all sorts. I chose this hobby because it's always an adventure--you never know what you're going to find. :) It's also a good investment since you can usually pick up misprints locally (or on MOTL, etc.) quite cheaply. The filler cards and pre-release cards do pose a difficulty, though. I don't make sets or collect promos, or anything like that.

Title: Re: what do you collect
Post by Chad2012 on Oct 27th, 2003, 4:23am

Mostly anything old (IE Alpha-AN) or weird (IE misprints) but I also have every card Quinton Hoover illustrated (except the best one :-/ ) and about 320 Dark Rituals.

I started a near impossible task when I started in Magic the Gathering during 4th/Ice Age. This task is still ongoing and incomplete as of today. What may you ask in my project? Well it is to simply have a pack mint card from every set and every expansion (English and US released) every printed. This also includes all promos, foil and non-foil. I completed the first set of foils (Urza's Legacy), but decided to stop after that. At 3 sets a year, all my gaming budget $$ would have to get poured into MTG, and I decided against this.

I have everything complete except:
Alpha Mox Jet
Alpha Mox Sapphire
Foil JSS Giant Growth
Foil JSS Two-Headed Dragon
Foil DCI Argothian Enchantress
a few random 8Ed cards I still need (not in a hurry here)
About a 1/3 of the rares left of Mirrodin to complete

Title: Re: what do you collect
Post by summermagicman on Oct 27th, 2003, 6:42pm

I only collect summer magic cards at this time.

I'm particularly interested in the more playable common summer magic cards.

I don't have exact count, but I have about 25-30 summer cards now. This is nothing compared to some magic rarities members, but it's a start! I really picked an awful magic rarity to collect $$....

I used to collect alpha/beta/and other oldies, but stopped acquiring them.

I notice there there are a few Giant Growth JSS auctions happening all the time now, including  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3151805474&category=19115  which is not too bad for a relatively new card (and there are 2 of them in this auction).  It should help close one of the holes in your collection.

Thanks for the info, but I am waiting to get this card and the 2-Headed Dragon from a source I get cheap JSS cards from.  At the price I get them at, the wait is worth it.  I just need to note that they are missing from my sets.

I´m a plain normal Promo collector.

I just want to get each only once. At the moment I´m missing
Japanese JSS V.Hammer
JSS 2headed
JSS Giant Growth
DCI Argothian Enchantress

and being bored I also started collecting the Beta set but at the moment I´m concentrating on the Beta P9 (only Ancestral missing and swap Alpha Jet for Beta one) as I think they will go up in value faster than the other cards.

And I used to collect Lord of the Pits and Leviathans as they are cheap to obtain and are just plain cool :)
So if any of you has any cool Lords or Leviathans just drop me a line (but not the normal ones, I´m missing some foreign wb ones only)

What condition is your Alpha Jet in?

Title: Re: what do you collect
Post by fvzappa on Oct 28th, 2003, 6:45pm

I collect things outside of MTG, but sticking to cards, I collect:

1 of every card from every standard English set in NM/M condition. I'm about a year or so behind mintcollector & probably not quite as strict as him...but close.

I still need Legends, Unl, Beta, Alpha cards to finish those sets. Mirrodin & 8th too, but hey.

Also included are Alternate 4th (I have 201 diff. cards & am getting more) & Summer (a pipe dream). Misprints too, I have so many I want more.

Alpha Playtest/ LD/ Gamma cards. I have a bunch & of course want more.

And getting to the goofy stuff I pick up:

Frozen Shade
Phantom Monster
Urborg (a legends land)
5th edition Marsh Viper
8th edition Death Pits of Rath

The above quote Edgar A. Poe!

Lower priority:

Wall of Putrid Flesh
Gaea's Leige (for a friend)
Nettling Imp
Serra Angel old artwork
Granite Gargoyle
Anything old school- I dig the T1 stuff

I won't even start on my record collection & rock & roll memorabilia....

I used to have a sizeable Lightning Bolt collection.  In fact I made it a point to sweep the college town I was in of all Lightning Bolts that could be found for months.  After awhile I actually created a deprivation in the area and refused to sell any I had.  This was pre-eBay, so people actually had to drive out of town to get anyt. 8)

Well that was then, but I recently sold them as I got offer $1 for each!

We sort of have the same thing happening here in Alberta, Canada.  Can't find bolts anywhere, and if you find someone who has them, normally have to pay $1-2 each.  Luckily, I have lots, so I need not buy  :)
We also have a shortage of Serra Angel's, as an employee at our largest Magic dealer here in Calgary was buying every Angel he came across.  For a while, Angels were worth about $20 each.  Not sure what the local market costs are anymore, but it was high for a bit.

well, 4th-8th serras i can easily get for 5 euro
revised and pre of course a little more expensive, but unless you mean a/b/u thats very expensive.
talking about expensive
recently went to a shop in amsterdam called the gamekeeper
as i checked a few of the prices i checked enough
priest of titania 5 euro(euros are more then dollars)
bayou revised exc/nm(25 euro)
and more of that redicilous high prices

sylvanstu: You misunderstood me, I cant get that prices, otherwise i would have bought them in bulk in america, that particular store was asking such prices
Most prices he asked of good cards(and older cards like legends) where about 50-250% higher as you normally buy them

My point is that either a single person or group of people can have an influence on the local card economy.

Title: Re: what do you collect
Post by fvzappa on Oct 29th, 2003, 10:38pm

So true. Where I live, back in the pre-ebay days, there was a guy who collected Ball Lightnings & ripped them up. He hated the card, he had been beaten too many times by it.

He would trade with someone to get their Ball Lightnings, and much to their suprise (the first time they witnessed it), he'd rip it up in front of them, pull out a long box & throw it in there. In the box were several hundred ripped up Ball Lightnings. After I got over the shock I found it funny.

I still have a playset of 4th edition Ball Lightnings I have held onto for years. And even though I haven't seen him in forever, it is a difficult card to find here.

Post by blackfire100 on Oct 30th, 2003, 11:11am

fvzappa: where do you live? i would hate to meet up with this anti-ball lightning guy. i am a big fan of the card and i like to collect all that i can.right now i have somewhere around 50-60 of them, and when i went to states recently, i was looking for them and there were none to be had. lol

Title: Re: what do you collect
Post by fvzappa on Oct 30th, 2003, 3:08pm

I hope you don't tear your Ball Lightnings up! :-/

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

Also in my town there is a guy who has 14,000+ Gaea's Leige cards. I hope no one else out there collects that card... Actually, feel free to trade them to me, he'd love to get more!

Title: Re: what do you collect

I collect ALL commons from ALL sets in ALL languages.

It's a cheap way to keep collecting for years and years!
Commons are cheap and it takes VERY long to complete a set (although I will probably NEVER get a complete set of the expensive Summer Magic Commons - I now have 23 of them, 20 of which are different!)

Besides that, I also collect Misprints (any type of misprint in any numbers).

Title: Re: what do you collect
Post by Tenacious_Dyl on Oct 31st, 2003, 2:33am

I at one point, was obsessed with Antiquities cards (only original, bb, english). I bought EVERY card my local store had from the edition, raided their 'unsorted' box, and raided about 85% of the people's trade/for-sale binders that attend... shortly after, people needing cards such as original Strip Mines, Candelabra of Tawnos, and Mishra's Factory, realized they had to pay me a lot ;-) or find them out of town. Sadly, due to a lack of money on my part, I sold most of my Antiquities collection. Including a minty signed (Winter) Mishra's Factory (signed by Kaja AND Phil :-( ).

So yes, I agree with mintcollector, you can easily effect your local card economy. Without a doubt :-)

FOILIES!

Ya, I'm a major foil collector/nut.

I am currently working on collecting one of every foil ever printed and, well one of each as the come out of course.  I'm not doing basic lands at the moment, but I'm sure I'll add them in to the equation sooner or later.  I have a full Foil Odysset and Torment Set, a soon to be complete Foil MTGO Onslaught set that I'll redeem, and a near-complese physical Legions Foil set.

For more info about this quest of mine, you can check out...  THE FOIL PROJECT OFFICIAL WEBSITE:

Donations always appreciated (the list of what I have is on that website, and I'll always trade for foils!

It would be easier to help you if your list was more organized.  The way it is now is too overwhelming for me to look at.  Try different sets on different pages, and using multiple columns.  Maybe have some links to what the card looks like.  I donno, just hard for me to read.

It would be much easier to help you if you listed the ones you DONT have.  Any chance of that happening?

I got about 150-200 extra foils here, mostly commons, but some U and Rs also, as well as lands.  I have been trying to decide what to do with them, as I do not play anymore, and I do not collect them.  I used to collect Red foils, but stopped after my purchase of Planeshift foils were lost, and by the time I knew for certain that they were gonzo, it was too late (and costly) to get back into it.
I will try to take a look at your HAVEs page, as there are about a dozen foils I need for my land sets (C/U&R), and I will let you know if we can try for a trade or not.
Thanx

I collect almost all of it: I have full sets of alpha, beta, unlim.,a.n., antiq., leg, ect. Up to mirrodin. (Most foils also.)

Also have portal, portal sec.age., and three kingdoms.
I also have most of the dci promos, fnm foils, judge prizes, arena, all the lands apac, euro, guru, ect.
I also have unopened boosters and starters from most sets.
(All the good ones, every thing from alpha to urzas block. All in english. I wanted to start small, then move on to other languages.)
I even have an unglued set, vanguard sets, and most of the 6X9 cards.

Now it's summer magic and perhaps other misprints, like 4th summer, mis-cut, error cards.
Then filler cards, test prints, counters, tokens, who knows what.  Fhew!

The point is it's alot to carry around. (I dread moving, i'd need a dump truck to carry it all!)

I'd help you move  :)

I don't know about anyone else, but I get joy out of looking at other people's collections.  People don't understand me when I say their collection is exciting, or fun.  I guess its sad, but I guess magic cards float my boat.  Don't get me wrong, Magic cards don't give me wood or anything.  I just like them alot.

It takes all day. JOY!! :D

DKramer, I sent you a PM.  I hope I have something you can add to your Foil Project.

Hello, I have complete Sets of all English releases (except for Alpha and Unlimited, since I have Beta), except for FOIL sets.

Unfortunately, my Legends set is in Italian and I'd like it to become English one day, but on the "extra side" I have 1 Italian first edition set and 1 Italian Dark set.

I also collect 4 X FOIL of all "playable" cards.

Not all my cards are NM, I'm not too keen about condition.

I also pick oddities sometimes... I have a collection consisting of about 150 Miscuts, Misprints, Filler cards, a touch of Summer, upside-down backs etc. etc.

Recently, I enjoyed picking up Magic-related items such as Full sets of "French Unofficial" Alpha + Beta and 1 set of Havic the Bothering (still 2 missing there).

I'm considering to start a set of Tranquilities, since I discovered I have about 200 including 1 Summer one... maybe a project will follow soon  ;D

EDIT: Still need to complete my English Portal 3K set, of course  :-/

I collect tokens, especially tokens in anime/manga style (such as tokens illustrated by Jun Minagishi).

I'm relatively new to the game, and thus haven't really found my niche yet. Right now I'm still concerned with getting as many cards as I can get my hands on to try out various deck combinations etc etc.

Don't get me wrong, I want to collect. I just have no idea what would float my boat, so to speak. :/

(If anyone has any ideas, though, I'm open.)

Welcome to the forums.  Look at what we are collecting, and pick whatever we *don't* ;D

I'll take that advice.

It seems like it gets competitive when it comes to collecting from the threads I read. ^^

You should collect crimps.  Never too many crimp collectors.

Right now I'm collecting playsets of standard Kev Walker foils, along with his other promos and rarities. I'll tell you know, those DCI Balance are going to hurt, and it'll be a miracle before I can ever get a test print City of Traitors.  Eventually i'll move on to playsets his older non-foil cards but i figured i'd start here.  The reasoning behind the playsets is so that I can eventually build myself a Kev Walker deck.

If I ever get that project finished I plan to start collecting Martina Pilcerova cards. Other than that I dont collect much.

I'm busy collecting signed cards. My target is any signed card up through the Urza cycle. Right now I am closing in on 2,000 cards.

Collecting signed cards has a major bonus, you get to know the artists. I have to say that there are a lot of very nice people who have created art for the various MTG core sets and expansions.

Wouldn't happen to know of a way to contact Mr. Walker outside of a convention or prerelease for card signing would you?

I collect a number of things....lets see:

Most promo cards--things like prerelease, arena, FNM, player rewards, etc.

Oversized cards--vanguard, 8th ed box toppers, 6x9's.

Tokens--but only the 'official' ones.  I don't really care for any of the third party tokens out there.  (Side note: I have a ton of sealed packs of the "Double-Sided Tokens Series 2", if anyone is interested)

Magic 'boxed' sets, like Anthologies, Beatdown, Portal Gift Sets, etc.

My 'pet' card is the Vizzedrix, even though there aren't very many versions out there.

Complete Sets--currently working on Chronicles (almost done!), Homelands (yes, Homelands!), Alliances, Fallen Empires, Fifth Dawn.

I would like to get into collecting the various 'Support Cards' listed on this site, as well as some of the official WOTC Life Counters.

Favorite Artist--Mark Tedin.

Regards,
Aleks

Hi folks - first post here

Just like notsofasteddie, I too collect autographs.  I don't have nearly as many as him (only 149), but it's still a nice collection.

All of my cards were signed from the regulars at the San Diego Comic-Con (Rob Alexander, Rebecca Guay, Terese Nielsen, rk post).  Actually, the only card I bought signed was Khabal Ghoul.

I also like to collect Twiddles, although my "collection" is rather small (5x Alpha, 1x Beta, and several 7th).

cheers

edit:  I think i'm goning to try to complete the Weatherlight set.  Why not?
