I dont see the connection between MTG and PSA for completists...
PSA is in no way whatsoever (correct me if im wrong) associated with WOTC, so why should a card graded by that specific unrelated company be more interesting than a regular copy of it?
Is the future MTG collector going to have a card graded by every card grading company out there? Roll Eyes
Ditch PSA, it's not MTG, it's just silly how it has become so big and important in the magic world... That's my opinion anyway.

Muldoon, I completely agree with you. I have never looked for PSA cards and think I never will.

This grading thing is everywhere, from toys to cards to anything collectable. As a collector, i like it. As a player, I don't. But it's available for those who want it. And since Summer is off the list, those who collect PSA have to be a bit excited.

Muldoon,

Believe it or not, PSA (or some other, supposedly professional, authenticator) grading is the stamp of approval necessary for some collectors to even get involved in a category of collectibles.  From there it often becomes an ego trip.

Many people who want to get involved in some category of collectible, whether it is stamps or coins, sports memorabilia or Magic cards, are fearful of frauds and ripoffs.  Some of this fear comes from their own ignorance, either of the collectible category in general, or from some nuance of grading or determining authenticity.  Some of this fear came from grading rip-offs in numismatics during the 1970s.  And in fact coins were the first area where professional grading took hold in a major way.  Rip-offs in Sports memorabilia during the 1980s (phoney autographs and trimmed or doctored cards) added to the problem, and to the use of outside authenticators as the solution.

The promise of PSA is that when you buy a graded card, you know it is real, and you know, sight-unseen, what kind of condition it is in (within their grading scheme).  So people who have never played or collected magic cards can read pricing and availability trends for PSA graded cards and invest, or at least speculate, in these items.  They can build a portfolio of collectibles, as they might with stocks or bonds. This is the stamp of approval aspect I alluded to.

As for the ego trip, PSA markets itself further, by making its site available to those who want to post their sets of cards.  These sets get rated, based upon the percentage of cards that have been graded by PSA, and by the average grade obtained.  So if you want the "best" collection of Arabian Nights cards in the world (or at least the PSA world), all you need to do is get close to a full set of cards graded 9 or 10.

A lot of people get into this kind of mindset.  You don't need skill or knowledge to build a great set or collection, just money.  Lately I've seen a ton of junk commons and uncommons  from sets like Unlimited, Antiquities, Beta, and Arabian Nights.  These cards have sold for obscene premiums ($1.00 commons going for $20 to $40 each) simply because they are PSA 9 or 10.  I have to think they are feeding these PSA collections.  And the sellers are playing up to these collectors, with population reports.  As an example, a PSA 9 card might read "one of three at this grade, none higher!"  Of course that just means that not many people are foolish enough to spend $10 getting a $1 card graded.  But the PSA zealots don't think like that; their universe often includes only the cards that are graded.

Personally, I'd much rather have mintcollector-graded cards.  You could make a lot of money grading cards, mintcollector - you should go into business Cheesy

Looks like one of the new style textless player rewards cards. Probably be from the next release of MPR goodies.
Art looks right for one Chris's and it fits right in with the current artistic stylings of the Kamigawa block.
One of a kind?
Nah.
Just looks like a Mana Leak that got leaked.

(except for the fact that the deck was banned) I could make most of my sideboard for my Vial-Affinity deck out of these cards (terror, mana leak, oxidize) Smiley

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for looking at my auctions this past week.

FYI- Don't bid on that Mana Leak.  It's next month's FNM.

FNM?  I highly doubt that, considering that it's a textless Mana Leak.  So far, only player rewards cards have been textless, and it's already been confirmed that a Chris Rush-illustrated Mana Leak would be a player rewards card this year.  Plus, even if they were to start doing textless promos for FNM (unlikely since they consider the textless promos acceptable since they will be received by experienced players), the FNM "theme" isn't due to change again until July.

Unless that was just a typo.  Wink
