Citadel Gaming was a company founded by Mixe Brixius and Tom Ebling which specialized in the production of tokens for Magic the Gathering. Printed on a material called sentra, the first wave consisting of 11 different tokens, called Alpha, was released in July 1995 with a print run of 50,000. All Alpha tokens featured a black border which was erroneously placed too close to the edges of the tokens, thereby causing the color to smear around the edges. Therefore, three months after the release, a second series of tokens, called Beta, was printed without the black border, this time with a print run of 75,000, and the Alpha print run was recalled. The Beta tokens sold well, and in September 1995, a third print run, named Unlimited, was issued, this time featuring colored tokens and multiple artwork. This third print run, consisting of 150,000 tokens, was sold to stores in boxes which contain 270 tokens divided into 18 receptables, each holding 15 tokens of the same type, but with random artwork. In stores, the tokens were sold individually for $ 0.25 US.

Citadel Gaming closed its doors in May 1996. While the tokens sold well, unavoidable flaws in the printing process demanded manual corrections of every token, thus rendering the production unfeasible.
