Fat Packs have been introduced to the game with Mercadian Masques. They contain, in accordance to each card set, 6 booster packs, 2 randomly chosen standard foil cards, a novel, a player's guide, and, beginning with Planeshift, a life counter. Until Ninth Edition, the life counter has been a Spindown life counter, a twenty-sided die painted in of the five colors of Magic where all numbers were placed adjacent to each other and the number "20" was replaced by the appropriate set symbol. Starting with Ravnica: City of Guilds, the whole Fat Pack design was drastically changed and the life counter was exchanged with a standard spinning wheel life counter.
