Métagame's Token Cards

Index | 2003 | 2004 | 2005

The overall success of some US companies in producing and selling their own series of token cards for Magic: The Gathering has not gone unnoticed internationally. Thus a French online cardstore named Métagame's, which is also host of the French Magic website MagicVille, decided to join their ranks in 2003. Seven different token cards had been produced at first, but unlike most other token cards on the market, Métagame's used photographies of specially dressed and made-up female models instead of artwork to depict the individual token creatures. All tokens could be bought individually, for buying a complete set a buyer was awarded with an additional Goblin and Soldier token. 1000 copies of each card were printed, the Goblin and Soldier token were produced an additional 1000 times to supply the complete set offer bonus.

In 2004, Métagame's had started to reprint their token cards with a slightly modified layout. The photo window had been enhanced, the corners had been rounded, and the outer border of the backside had been removed. Métagame's has made it a habit to synchronize the publication of their new token cards with high-level tournament events.

Beginning with 2005, Jess, a fellow Frenchman and creator of the Neo-Token token cards, supervised the artistic portion of the token card production. As a consequence, the photographies used for the cards were now heavily modified to add a surreal touch to them. Square corners were reintroduced to simplify the production process.
