Identifying Alt 4th cards

I know that some people say that it takes a black light to identify Alt 4th cards, but there are easier ways to spot them.  I'm guessing that everyone can pick out the card that don't look correct for regular 4th Edition here.  There are two Conversions, one Alt 4th and one normal 4th Edition.

http://www.augsburg.edu/~dawsons/images/alt4th/conversion-fronts.jpg

http://www.augsburg.edu/~dawsons/images/alt4th/conversion-backs.jpg

Take a good look at the backs of the Conversions.  The fronts are less obviously different, but it's still easy enough to spot the differences.

Here are some higher res scans of an Alt 4th card with some wear.  Alt 4th does not appear to have normal wear patterns.  I have never seen anything like this on a normal Magic card:

http://www.augsburg.edu/~dawsons/images/alt4th/tranq-front.jpg

http://www.augsburg.edu/~dawsons/images/alt4th/tranq-back.jpg

One difference which should be readily apparent is that the typeface does not look like a normal 4th Edition card, but it does share many characteristics with 5th Edition.

You are, of course, welcome to ignore all this and just use a black light if you wish.

(I lost track of where the discussion was occuring with regard to identifying Alt 4th -- Ralph, if you want to move this there feel free to do so.)

So what exactly is this difference in the A's then?
And which A's (MAGIC, Gathering or DECKMASTER ?)

Look at the images psrex provided and at the upper right corner of the A from "MAGIC" on the back.
The upper-right-A-corner of a standard Magic card is light-colored while on a alt. 4th it is dark-colored.

btw. fvzappa already mentioned that before Wink

Aaahh... I see it now!
Before I was looking at the edges and the shapes of the letters, not the color of the upper right corner!
Thanks, this will save me a few Euros, since I don't have to buy a blacklight now!

Could you also give me a link to fvzappa's remark?

There is no link to my remark anymore... sorry to say a few members weren't happy that I mentioned the "a" difference in Magic. But unfortunatly you all have memories..... I changed my post a while back.

I guess I'll keep the other secrets to myself, as if a blind man can't tell the difference now! You all will have to learn the difference in the rulebooks now. bwahaha.

If any of you want to trade, I'm up for it!

At least the starters are easy to identify!  I'd like to buy a box of alt starters.  I tried to buy the last one, to share with the forum, but the price got a lot steeper than the cards were worth.  I wonder what the price will be when we find that there are far more of these than star city claims?

That's the dilema I'm in, hammr. Undecided
On the one hand I want to sell those starters at the best price (for me). Why lose money?
On the other hand I want to share these starters with the
community at a reasonable price. But what's reasonable?
If I sell them now for XX each and they drop down to YY, you all will blame me for selling too expensive.
See...
Greetings
Jan

EDIT: The 40 USD was fetched out of the air, and only meant as an example ... I don't sell it for this amount! Sorry ...  I made my point.

I'll buy one from ya. Have plenty of opened ones, but not unopened. PM me.

Hope the "a" bit makes things really easy for everyone now. Also apologise to those who are upset I spilled the beans...

Please, anyone who wants to trade, I have a lot of good extras I'll cough up for the ones I need!

And if you didn't catch it on another thread, I have scans of the different starters here:

Good luck to all of those who are going for a set. It is a bit cheaper than.... ummmmm.....

First of all, many thanks to fvzappa for initially revealing the 'a' 'secret', and to Gryfalia for reminding us about it.

I've checked most of my 4th Edition cards (all except for any reprints, which I keep in the sets they were reprinted in (e.g. my 4th Birds of Paradise is kept within my 8th Edition cards).
Unfortunately I don't have any Alternate 4th Edition commons Angry (I collect ALL commons from ALL editions in ALL languages), BUT I do have 2 Alternate 4th Edition RARES Shocked Grin! A NM Ivory Tower and an Exc. Bad Moon (but with 3 very thin scratches on the back, that can only be seen under specific lighting conditions).
So if anyone is interested in trading these Alternate 4th Edition RARES for Alternate 4th Edition COMMONS, feel free to make me an offer!
