Is the Ultimus a Bear?

I'm coming to the point in my collection where I need to figure out if the Mistform Ultimus fits in with the collection.  I've only got two foreign ones so far, and let's not even talk about foil ones.  If I'm going to stop collecting them, I should stop sometime soon.  So, do you think the Ultimus has any place in this collection?

While technically it does have bear as one of its many (many, many, many) creature types, it is not printed on the card, or pictured in the art, and I would say no - draw the line here - it is an exception, and does not count.

If i collected bears i guess the art would have to have something to do with it.

I'm kind of in the same situation I collect Armageddons and in P3k Ravages of War is a Armageddon in text but is it a Armageddon can't go by art here though. I guess it all comes down to do you want to collect it or not I'm undecided right now. to me it would mean only 4 cards to you with foils other languages a lot more. let me know what you decide i'm interested to see if you do and why.

I'd say don't bother collecting this "technicality".  Better focus would be to collect the official Bears, and then maybe move on to cards like "Bearscape" and "Grizzly Fate".

I agree and disagree with Shawn:

You should start adding the Bear token cards, but the Ultimus is a Bear and should remain in the collection.   Kiss

The ultimas from what I recall isn't a bear until it is in play.  So while at one point it has the potential to be a bear it really isn't.  I see no reason to collect it and don't feel it belongs.  I would definetly go for stuff like "Bearscape" which actually has bear in the name before I weven touched this card.

I, also, don't really think this is a real bear. I would rather get the cards that have bears in the pictures, although they are maybe not even named anything with "bear" like that blue card, I can't remember the name right now Grin
It's a bear which is kind of going up in smoke Grin
I think I'm not making any sense right now but anyway, rather cards with bears on the picture than mr ultimatus.

I think Muldoon is in the same boat as flatmatt, since Muldoon is collecting Whelps, and if he is not putting Ultimus in his collection as a psedo-whelp, his reasonings may be the same that flattmatt would wish to use.

Actually, it is..

From the oracle text:

Mistform Ultimus
Legendary Creature -- Illusion
3/3
Mistform Ultimus is every creature type (even if this card isn't in play).

So TECHNICALLY it's a bear, but it doesn't say bear and doesn't look like a bear.  I would collect Bearscape before I collected this.  It IS a funny 'for completeness' issue, and maybe someday, but I wouldn't sweat it..

Wow I was just shot down savagely.  Thanks for correcting me, I still stick with my opinion that it shouldn't be in the collection though.

Well, my biggest concern is the incredibly stupid, but likely, situation where I end up having all the "real" Bears, but am missing a bunch of Ultimuses.  I think I'm going to remove the Ultimus from the collection for now, and leave it to the Legendary and Illusion collectors, at least for now.  As is, it's really just a remnant of when the collection was English-only and I already had the Ultimus anyway.

So, does anyone need eight Ultimuses?

No.  I already have 5, and the deck I planned to make never came to be....
