The comic book The Shadow Mage is a four part mini-series published in 1994 by Armada Comics, an imprint of Acclaim Comics. The first two issues include special printings of Magic cards. These cards are identical to 4th Edition cards but have a copyright date of 1994 rather than 1995, like regular 4th Edition cards.

Armada Comics produced an entirety of 35 comics, 40 if including the special compilation issues, starting with the Ice Age and The Shadow Mage series in July 1995. The Magic comics series proved to be too unpopular, however, and was discontinued in October 1996 with the Urza-Mishra War comic. The production of the Alliances comic was cancelled.

In four Armada Comics publications special cardboard counters were added.

There is also an oversized alternate art Serra Angel card which was an addition of the Serra Angel comic published by Armada Comics.
