The Chinese government has restrictions of what can and can not be depicted. Specifically, depictions of death, religion, or erotica are prohibited. Consequently, when Wizards of the Coast printed card sets for distribution in China, several artworks had to be changed. Over time, the artwork was no longer replaced, but modified. Furthermore, Wizards of the Coast has decided to meet Chinese standards when commissioning new artwork, hence alternate art has rarely become necessary anymore.

The artwork for the Simplified Chinese Sixth Edition set was changed so late that the artwork of another card, Unworthy Dead, had to be reused and the artist name, Ian Miller, was forgotten to be adjusted.

For Ninth Edition, the nonfoil version of Drudge Skeletons was apparently overseen and thus received standard art.

Foil cards were introduced in China with Invasion. However, all Invasion foil cards were printed in English. Planeshift was the first set featuring Simplified Chinese foil cards.
