[very-off-topic] Anyone here living in SFO or LA?
« on: Sep 9th, 2004, 10:27am » |

Hello all,
Beginning of October, I'll be travelling for two weeks in the US. California and National Parks.
Is there any member living in LA or San Francisco who could let me know about the Do's and Don'ts of these cities?
Thanks
Eric.

Pretend you are Swiss. Californians are known to hate wig-wearing Frenchies.

It was not allowed to drink beer on the wall splitting the beach from the promenade. On the promenade and on the beach it was permitted though. His freind who stand next to him but had no contact to the wall did not get fined.
The beer was his up too now most expensive one.

When you are in California, and I imagine you will be in L.A. also - 2 things. If you get the chance, DO visit Governor Schwarzenegger and DO NOT go to East Central LA (not unless you have a large enough Posse with you - or some good high grade weapons to trade/sell/show).

I'll get you some tips. I live in SoCal and have lived in NorCal. And some of us like the French, so don't be too paranoid. Just in Orange County, maybe.

He's trying to trick you. It's a well known fact Californians hate the French. It has something to do with our east coast getting the Statue of Liberty while they got nothing.
I still say pretend to be Swiss or Netherlandian.

Sorry, but I must disagree with you on part to this reply!
Kelowna, BC, Canada has the best wine - as they make the best Ice Wine in the world. Not necessarily normal wines, but for Ice Wine, they are the tops!!

Ahem .... "he" is a "she" and part of the dreaded "liberal media" (newspaper, not ... shudder ... TV) who went out and bought French wine in protest of the "french fry" boycott and French wine dumping incidents. So there.
(and the Pacific NorthWest has some good wines ... in my neck of the woods, Temecula has some good local wineries)
Now the tips .... drum roll please
For Southern California and SF:
don't try to drive anywhere from west to east in an afternoon in socal, or in the morning from east to west.
santa monica is nice, the Getty (museum) is great. disneyland is worth it, knott's berry farm is not.
sf. avoid fisherman's warf motels/hotels. there are nicer places in the city. don't miss golden gate park. take bart, explore north beach, chinatown -- but leave the car at the hotel and walk!
For the Outdoors and Northern California:
go upcountry at Yosemite. climb mountains.
visit Lassen Volcanic National Park. hike.
camp in the redwoods. Jedidiah Smith State Park is as good as anything in redwood national park.
don't bother with king's canyon or sequia. long drive, not worth it.
drive highway 79 (?) and 395 down the spine and the backside of the sierra nevada. visit tahoe.
if you wants remote, try the "lost coast" of mendocino county.. but get a good map!

Not all Cailfornians hate the French, we just hate the French whine!
Just like the East coast whine.
Nothing personal. Californians have better things to worry about than spoiled tourists and snowbirds.
Our priorities are driving to fast, plastic sugery, punching out paparazzi, 'doing lunch', and generally being snobbish to anyone who doesn't share our cultured lifestyle of shallow and shameless.

I agree. Don't come here if you're French. The 'Good Ol' Boys' will get ya! Have you ever seen Deliverance?
