Eighth Edition Box Set Cards

Eighth Edition is the ninth official print run of the Core Set and was released in July 2003. It consists of 357 cards and exists in English, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. Eighth Edition cards were the first to appear with a new card layout which caused much controversy among fans of the game.

Aside from boosters and preconstructed decks, there is an Eighth Edition box set called Core Game in existence which is aimed to be an introductory item to playing Magic and hence is categorized as a Starter Level product. It contains:

  • 80 Eighth Edition cards divided into 2 decks and 1 Advanced Booster Pack (2 x 33 + 1 x 14)
  • 1 standard foil Eighth Edition Elvish Champion card
  • 1 enhanced rule book with 8th Edition rules
  • 1 CD which contains 2 explanatory test games, basic information about how to play Magic, an overview about Magic: The Gathering Online, and the Magic: The Gathering Online software (CD version only)
  • 1 manual for Magic: The Gathering Online (CD version only)
  • 2 player guides which cover 1 demo game
  • 2 playmats to explain the different game zones
  • 2 cardboard life counters

12 of the 80 cards, 7 of them being different, are exclusively available in the Eighth Edition box set. As a result, no foil versions of these cards exist. Being considered too weak for standard play, but being highly suitable to explain the basics of the game, these cards are part of Eighth Edition, but feature a special enumeration to distinguish them from regular Eighth Edition cards.

One of these cards, Eager Cadet, has also been added to Eighth Edition Demogame boosters which have been handed out freely in stores and at events to promote Magic. 

The French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish versions of the box only contain:

  • 66 Eighth Edition cards divided into 2 decks (2 x 33)
  • 1 enhanced rule book with 8th Edition rules
  • 2 player guides which cover 1 demo game
  • 2 playmats to explain the different game zones

Due to the removal of the Advanced Booster Pack, 2 of the 7 special cards, the Sea Eagle and the Silverback Ape, are not included and therefore do not exist in French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. The card numbers have not been adjusted to this change, however.
